What Did Dr. Oz Really Say About African Mango?

Recently Dr. Oz said that African Mango, scientifically known as Irvingia Gabonensis, could potentially help people lose weight quickly and easily. Dr. Oz is a well liked and well respected TV personality and doctor. Needless to say, he has quite the following. As soon as this statement was made, supplement companies capitalized and African Mango products began popping up everywhere.

Many of these African Mango supplements feature a picture of Dr. Oz on their website or even his picture on the product itself. Sometimes these companies state “As seen on Dr. Oz” or “Endorsed by Dr. Oz.” But did Dr. Oz really endorse any of these products? What did he really say about African Mango?

The truth is Dr. Oz did NOT endorse any particular African Mango product. In fact, he never endorses specific brands; he simply provides information. The information he provided was not about any particular African Mango product, but rather the key ingredient found in many African Mango supplements. That ingredient is Irvingia Gabonensis Seed Extract, also known as IGOB131.

On his website, Dr. Oz stated that taking 150mg of IGOB131 twice daily has been shown to help decrease weight and waist circumference. These claims are backed by a study conducted by the Lipids in Health and Disease Journal. Dr. Tanya Edwards, guest blogger for the Dr. Oz website, summed up the results of the study; “In the two randomized trials in overweight and obese humans using Irvingia, participants in the Irvingia group lost on average 5-10 pounds/month compared to the placebo group. Neither group made any lifestyle changes during the trial. They also noted that cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels improved significantly compared to the control group.”

Do not be fooled by supplement companies that claim their products are endorsed by Dr. Oz. This is simply not true. Dr. Oz simply stated that IGOB131 could help people lose weight. He also warned consumers to be careful when choosing an African Mango supplement. Not all African Mango supplements contain IGOB131 and only the ones that do are proven to be beneficial. The best African Mango supplement will contain 100% pure IGOB131.
